What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a highly evolved system that utilizes very fine and thin, hair-like needles to stimulate the body's own ability to heal. It involves little to no pain. The points needled are based on a comprehensive map of the human body's channels and meridians. Needles placed at precise locations promote the body’s own natural healing, thus providing a tremendous amount of relief.
How does it work?
Acupuncture involves stimulating specific points on the body by inserting needles through the skin to cause an effect in the physical functions of the body. It has a twofold effect on the body: it stimulates both the nervous system and the vascular system. It works on a neurophysiological level by sending the brain messages to heal a specific area in the body. It also works by stimulating the vasculature in areas of the body that are sick or injured by increasing circulation and providing freshly oxygenated blood. Doing so helps clear away toxins, debris, and inflammation, thus creating an environment of optimum health and wellness.
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been in practice for over thirty-five hundred years. It is a comprehensive system of modalities that treat the whole person-- body, mind, and spirit. These modalities include acupuncture, acupressure, herbs, cupping, tuina massage, moxibustion, electrical stimulation, and dietary & lifestyle changes. A combination of these modalities is often used for the relief of existing health conditions.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
The insertion of tiny, sterile needles is virtually painless. Quite often needles create a sense of well-being and relaxation.
What to expect during your visit?
Allow for 90 minutes for your initial consultation and visit. During the consultation, you will be examined and asked questions to assess your current level of health. Your exam will then be followed by an acupuncture treatment.
How much time do I need for follow up visits?
Follow up visits typically last for 60 minutes. We will do a 10-15 minute intake consisting of assessment, diagnosis, and follow-up questions. The remaining time will be spent in treatment for maximum benefit.
Are there any side effects?
There may be slight bruising from the needles or lightheadedness from getting up too quickly, however, most people experience a sense of calm and relaxation once the needles are in place. It is best to come to treatment after a light snack to avoid low blood sugar issues. After your treatment, give your body a moment to adjust. You may feel as if you've just woken up from a much-needed rest.
Strenuous activity before and after acupuncture is not recommended.
How many treatments are needed?
Generally, 6 to 12 treatments are needed to resolve existing health issues. The number of treatments will vary according to your condition. Chronic conditions take longer. We must also take into account your overall health and age with regard to how rapidly your body will heal.
What to wear?
It's best to dress in loose comfortable clothing that will allow easy access from the elbows and knees down. If access to the trunk of the body is needed accommodations can be made.
Parking?
There are parking spaces available in the back of the building, as well as metered parking in the street.
